The Cabbage Soup Diet has become a well-known weight loss plan. According to EveryDiet.org, it consists of eating a soup daily made from vegetables of the Brassica family, such as cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower. Note that is diet is not recommended for everyone. Basic nutritional requirements may be lacking. Check with your doctor first before starting this diet.

Benefits

EveryDiet.org asserts that some benefits can derive from eating the Cabbage Soup Diet. Weight loss can be experienced quickly because the soup is low in fat. It can kick-start healthier eating patterns and motivate people to stay away from junk foods. The Brassica family vegetables are nutritious and may prevent cancer from forming.

Basic Recipe

Margaret Danbrot shares a recipe in her book "The New Cabbage Soup Diet." She says to chop a large head of cabbage, along with six carrots, six medium onions, six green onions, two green peppers, three large tomatoes, five celery stalks and two cloves of garlic into small pieces. Add into a large pot with 6 quarts of water. Boil for 10 minutes uncovered then add 1-1/2 cups of cooked brown rice. Salt and pepper to taste.

Alternative Recipe

B.J. Hanson shares another cabbage soup recipe in his book "The Everything Soup Cookbook." He writes to chop a single small head of cabbage with a leek, carrot, onion and tomato. Saute the vegetables for five minutes. Add 5 cups of broth of your choice to a pot. Add a half cup of sauerkraut to the pot with the vegetables. Let it simmer for 45 minutes. Salt and pepper to taste.

Specifics

The Cabbage Soup Diet lasts seven days typically, according to EveryDiet.org. On day one, eat the soup with any fruit besides a banana. Day two requires you to eat the soup, plus a baked potato with butter and any other vegetables. Day three asks you to eat the soup, plus any vegetables and fruits. Day four requires the soup plus up to six bananas and fat-free milk. On day five, eat the soup, plus six tomatoes and 450 g of meat or fish. Day six is the soup again, plus meat and vegetables. Day seven is the soup, plus brown rice and pure fruit juice.

Warning

EveryDiet.org does not recommend the Cabbage Soup Diet because as it does not help with long-term weight loss. Eating the soup alone lacks the nutrition needed daily. The soup can also cause gas to form. Eating three well balanced meals a day is needed for proper health. Protein and whole grains are needed to provide the body with energy. The soup can be a health vegetable portion for you daily nutritional needs.
