Pernicious anemia is a condition that occurs when the body cannot make enough healthy red blood cells due to lack of proper absorption of vitamin B-12, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. Vitamin B-12 is necessary for the proper development of red blood cells. Pernicious anemia is treated with vitamin B-12 injections and pills. Iron supplements may also be prescribed to correct iron deficiency. Iron supplements may cause several side effects.

Upset Stomach

Iron supplements may cause irritation of the stomach lining resulting in nausea, vomiting and indigestion, according to MayoClinic.com. Patients are advised to take iron supplements with food in order to prevent stomach irritation and upset stomach.

Constipation

Iron supplements may cause constipation, according to MayoClinic.com. Patients taking iron supplements are advised to increase their intakes of fluids, especially water. Patients should also eat high fiber foods such as oatmeal, whole grains, green leafy vegetables and beans. Fiber increases bulk in stool and enables the stool to be easily excreted from the body.

Discoloration of Stool, Skin and Teeth

Iron supplements that are taken by mouth may cause stool to become dark green or black, according to MayoClinic.com. This is a harmless condition caused by unabsorbed iron. Patients receiving iron injections may notice a brown discoloration of their skin. This color usually fades away within several weeks or months. Liquid iron supplements may stain the teeth. To prevent teeth staining, patients should mix liquid iron supplements with fruit juice and use a straw.
