Potassium is a nutrient the body needs for proper function. It helps aid in muscle contractions, regulates blood pressure, promotes kidney function and is an electrolyte. Hyperkalemia is a condition associated with high potassium levels in the body. Symptoms of this condition include fatigue, difficulty breathing and irregular heartbeat. If you're trying to eat low-potassium foods, there are several options.
Fruits
Fruits are high in fiber, water content, natural sugar, vitamins and carbohydrates. Most fruits are high in potassium, but there are some exceptions. Examples of these are blueberries, grapes, grapefruits, strawberries, raspberries, rhubarb, watermelon and tangerines. Derivatives of certain fruits are also low in potassium--pear nectar, papaya nectar, peach nectar and apple sauce.
Vegetables
Vegetables are high in vitamins, minerals, water, fiber and have very low levels of fat. Examples of vegetables that are low in potassium include lettuce, green beans, cucumbers, raw cabbage, cauliflower, corn, rutabagas, turnips, water chestnuts, bean sprouts and radishes.
Dairy
Dairy products are high in calcium, vitamin D, fat and protein. Most of them are also high in potassium, but there are some exceptions. Butter, margarine, cream cheese, and ricotta, Colby, mozzarella, cheddar and feta cheese are all low. Non-dairy creamers and toppings are also low in potassium.
Grains
Whole grains are high in fiber, high in complex carbs, low in fat and have a moderate amount of protein. The only type of whole grain that's low in potassium is oatmeal. Products that are made from refined grains are also low in potassium. These include plain pasta, white rice, white bread and plain bagels.
Fruit Drinks
Drinks that are high in sugar and have low amounts of protein are also low in potassium. Processed fruit punches and artificial fruit drinks are examples.
Alcohol
Alcohol is high in calories and low in protein. Some forms are low in carbs and potassium. Examples of these include whiskey, rum, gin, vodka and daiquiris.
Condiments
Condiments are used to add flavor to foods that are bland. They can be either high or low in calories, and some types are low in potassium. Examples of these are jam, jelly, horseradish, barbecue sauce, hot sauce, cranberry sauce and orange relish. Salad dressings including Italian, French, blue cheese, Roquefort and vinegar and oil are also low in potassium.
