It doesn't have to be expensive to exercise. Plenty of free resources, both online and in your community, are available to help you start and stay with a fitness plan. According to the National Institutes of Health, all adults should be physically active, and some exercise is better than none. In conjunction with a healthy diet, exercise can help you lose weight and keep it off.

Weight Loss

Exercise is just one component of a successful weight-loss program. To lose weight successfully and maintain a healthy weight, you need to burn more calories than you consume, which can be difficult to do through exercise alone. A combination of regular physical activity and a healthy diet will help you lose weight, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Community

Check local community centers to see if they offer any free fitness classes. Most classes charge a fee, but some may be "free to try" or offer an income-based discount. Or, use community bulletin boards to advertise that you are looking for a running partner or tennis buddy; having someone to exercise with can make it more enjoyable. Take advantage of community parks, walking/running trails and bike paths.

Online

Plenty of online sources of free workouts exist. Online fitness magazines and websites offer workout demonstrations, and exercise applications are available for smartphones and tablet computers. You can also find short, free workout videos on video-sharing websites, such as YouTube.

Library

Your local library may be a great source of free workout materials. In addition to fitness books, most libraries now offer a video section with tapes and DVDs to rent. If you enjoy aerobics, dance routines, yoga, Pilates and other indoor workout options, you should be able to find a workout video option at your library. Some videos suggest or require the use of additional materials, such as hand weights or a medicine ball.

On Your Own

One of the easiest ways to get a free workout is to go for a walk or jog on your own. You will need a pair of athletic shoes and comfortable, exercise-appropriate clothing. Try walking briskly for 20 to 30 minutes several times per week. When you're ready, add some jogging. Jog for one minute, walk for two minutes, and so on. The more you work out, the easier it will become. Try exercising with a friend to make it more fun and to keep yourself accountable.
