The History of Jenny Craig

Jenny Craig is a weight loss service company that provides nutritional and fitness support for women. The company also sells Jenny Craig Cuisine, which consists of more than 80 meal and snack options. Jenny Craig came to fruition during the 1980s and continues to grow in the weight loss marketplace.

Founder

The Jenny Craig diet was co-founded by Jenny Craig, who was born in Louisiana in 1932.

Beginnings

In 1983, Jenny Craig and her husband, Sid, started a program called Jenny Craig, Inc. in Australia. The program focused on weight loss through fitness and proper nutrition.

Expansion

Jenny Craig weight loss centers opened in the United States in 1985, after success in Australia. By the end of the 1980s, there were 160 Jenny Craig weight loss centers worldwide.

Setbacks

During the 1990s, Jenny Craig, along with other weight loss programs like Weight Watchers and Nutri-System, came under scrutiny by the Federal Trade Commission for misleading advertisements. The company's stock also decreased during this time after the sudden resignation of its president.

Today

In 2006, Nestle purchased Jenny Craig for $600 million. According to the Diet Science website, Jenny Craig is still one of the leading weight loss companies on the market, with 650 centers operating worldwide, as of 2008.
