Lovaza is a fish oil medication used to treat people with very high triglyceride levels, a condition that can elevate the risk of a heart attack or a stroke. Usually it's prescribed in conjunction with a low-fat diet. Research indicates that your triglyceride level is as important as your cholesterol level when it comes to heart health.

Function

Lovaza fish oil contains the essential omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. As the Healthy Heart Guide explains, fish oil has demonstrated the ability to reduce triglyceride levels, help reduce inflammation and joint pain, and bolster your brain. The Mayo Clinic lists numerous health benefits of recommended amounts of DHA and EPA in the form of dietary fish or fish oil supplements.

Prescription vs. Supplements

Is Lovaza superior to nonprescription fish oil? Not according to the Healthy Heart Guide. "There is no clinical evidence indicating that Lovaza is any purer or more effective than a comparable, non-prescription fish oil supplement," it says.

Safety

The best argument in favor of the prescription fish oil supplement Lovaza over an over-the-counter fish oil is that Lovaza has been tested and approved for purity. Supplements are unregulated and sometimes don't contain the proper quality and quantity of ingredients that are stated on the labels. Yet there are plenty of reputable supplement companies that sell high-quality fish oil. The best arguments in favor of non-prescription supplements is that Lovaza is aimed at those with high triglycerides and might be too potent for those not suffering from that condition. In addition, Lovaza is much more expensive than non-prescription fish oil, running as much as $240 per month compared to about $20 per month.

Side Effects

Back pain, skin rashes, flu-like symptoms, infections, upset stomach and a change in your sense of taste are the most common side effects of Lovaza. Taking Lovaza can also result in digestive disorders, chest pain, migraines and respiratory problems.

Cautions

A diet and exercise program is likely to accompany a prescription for Lovaza. You must follow it to receive the full benefit of the medication. Lab tests are likely to be prescribed as well. The safety and effectiveness of Lovaza for children younger than 18 has not been established. If you become pregnant while on Lovaza, consult your doctor. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about other prescription and non-prescription medicines or supplements you are taking. Also inform your doctor if you have allergies to medicines or foods, especially fish or soy, if you have a blood clotting problem, if you have thyroid, liver or pancreatic problems, or if you are diabetic. Side effects from anticoagulants may be heightened by Lovaza. Also, be careful with dosage. The Mayo Clinic says high doses of any of these kinds of supplements may be harmful and can cause an increased risk of bleeding.
