When it comes time to replace your eyeglasses, it's important to know the appropriate size of eyeglass frames for your particular needs. Perhaps the most important measurements for eyeglasses are the widths of the bridge, lenses and frames. To ensure measurements are precise, each part of the glasses are measured in millimeters. As long as you have a metric ruler on hand, it only takes a few short moments to accurately measure the width of glasses.

Step 1

Hold a metric ruler in between the lenses for the bridge width measurement. It's best to get the distance between the most narrow spot of the bridge.

Step 2

Hold the metric ruler along the widest part of either lens to capture the lens width measurement. The ruler must be held as horizontal as possible to ensure you get the most accurate measurement. The measurement could be off by more than a millimeter if the ruler is held at an angle.

Step 3

Hold the ruler across the lenses to get the frame width measurement. The ruler must line up with the arm hinges to get the most accurate measurement.

Tips and Warnings

  • The measurements of the lenses and bridge can be found printed on the glasses, usually on the bridge piece or the inside of an arm.
