The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says asthma is long-term disease of the lungs which affects more than 22 million people, six million of whom are children. In asthma, the airways of the lungs become inflamed and blocked, resulting in a myriad of symptoms ranging from wheezing to an inability to breathe. Although there is no cure, asthma can be controlled with medication. The most commonly prescribed medications are steroids, especially inhaled steroids for long-term treatment. Oral steroids are used more frequently for the short-term because of the side effects that accompany them.

Prelone Syrup

An oral steroid, Prelone syrup decreases inflammation of the airways by altering your immune system's reaction to certain conditions such as asthma. This medication may reduce your ability to fight infection, therefore you should avoid contact with people who have colds or the flu.

Prelone Syrup should be taken with food and only in the dose prescribed. To ensure the correct dose is given, ask your pharmacist for a special dosing spoon or cup rather than using a teaspoon or tablespoon.

Common side effects include increased appetite and sweating, headache, insomnia, nervousness, nausea and headache. Serious side effects, which require immediate medical attention, include black stools, chest pain, severe nausea or vomiting, bleeding or bruising easily and unusual weight gain.

Pulmicort

Pulmicort is an inhaled steroid that prevents asthma attacks by decreasing the inflammation and swelling in your airways. It will only work as a preventative medication; if you have an acute attack, you need to use a fast-acting inhaler. When using Pulmicort in a nebulizer, you should rinse each piece thoroughly to avoid developing a yeast infection in your mouth.

Common side effects include white patches on the inside of your mouth or on your lips, nosebleeds, headaches, runny nose and sore throat. Serious side effects include ear pain, fever, vision problems, nausea, vomiting and breathing problems after your treatment.

Prednisone

Prednisone, another oral steroid, helps prevent asthma attacks by preventing the release of the substances in your body that cause inflammation in your airways. It comes in pill and liquid form and should be taken exactly as prescribed. If you miss a dose, do not take two doses at once. Skip your missed dose and continue with your next scheduled dose.

Common side effects include insomnia, mood changes, stomach pains, bloating, acne, bruising and skin discoloration. Serious side effects include problems with your vision, rapid weight gain, seizures, severe depression and shortness of breath.

Asmanex Twisthaler

Asmanex Twisthaler is inhaled and prevents substances that cause inflammation of your airways from being released, thus preventing asthma attacks. These inhalers are premeasured and spray a fine mist powder which, according to Drugs.com, you may be able to taste. If you do not taste it, ask your pharmacist to check your inhaler to ensure it is working properly rather than taking an extra dose.

Common side effects include a change in your menstrual cycle , feeling tired, joint and muscle pain, nausea and loss of appetite. Serious side effects include skin rash, bruising, muscle weakness and problems breathing after your treatment.
