The elliptical machine provides a cardio workout with less stress on knee and hip joints than treadmills. Some models of elliptical machines come equipped with upper body poles or handles to increase your cardio workout and to tone the upper and lower body simultaneously.
Light Tension
A 130-pound person burns about 350 calories with the elliptical set at the 1 to 5 levels and moving at a light pace for one hour. A 200-pound person can burn about 550 calories. People with joint problems who want a vigorous workout can set the elliptical to a low tension and speed up the pace. For a vigorous low-tension workout, a 130-pound person burns 475 calories and a 200-pound person burns 725 calories.
Medium Tension
By increasing the tension on the elliptical machine, you increase resistance. For a more intense workout, adjust the tension to 6 or higher. When working vigorously on an elliptical set to a range of 6 to 10, a 130-pound person can burn 530 calories, whereas a 200-pound person can burn 820 calories.
High Tension
At level 15, a 130-pound person can burn 525 calories in one hour moving at a slower pace or 650 calories moving at a faster pace. A 200-pound person can burn 820 calories at the slower speed and 1,000 moving faster.
