To work as a personal trainer, many employers require you to be certified. If you plan to work as an independent professional, the insurance provider for your business may require a certification. The American Muscle and Fitness Personal Trainer Certification is one of many available personal training certificates.
Careers in Personal Training
Jobs for fitness trainers, including personal trainers, are increasing in number, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. The BLS projects that between 2008 and 2018, this job field will grow by 29 percent. Personal trainers work in gyms and private fitness studios with individuals and small groups, demonstrating how to do exercises and monitoring trainee performance. Some personal trainers work full time and others work part time.
Eligibility
More than 7,000 fitness professionals in at least 50 countries have achieved the American Muscle and Fitness Personal Trainer certification. The AMFPT notes that anyone with an interest in or passion for the health and fitness industry may enroll in the certification process.
Coursework
Once you are approved for the certification process, you may complete the coursework in one of three ways. You can study an online manual, do the course by phone or at a live course. The AMFPT says there is no time limit for the completion of coursework.
Examination
Once you have completed the requisite coursework, you may take the exam in the same three ways. The exam is open-book and as of fall 2010, there is a $25 re-testing fee if you fail on the first attempt.
Maintaining Your Certificate
Maintaining your certificate is simple, It requires payment of a $25 annual renewal fee as of 2010, and reading the Continuing Education Module on the AMFPT Worldwide Certification website.
Considerations
Other health and fitness certifications exist through American Muscle and Fitness, including Master Trainer, Sports Nutrition and Pilates certificates.
