Extagen is an all natural supplement marketed as a male sexual enhancer. The proprietary blend of ingredients includes a combination of herbs that work together to induce vasodilation (widening of blood vessels), stimulate hormones and increase blood flow to the genital region. The following ingredients are believed to contribute to the effectiveness of Extagen.
Stimulators
Maca root, related to the radish and turnip, is native to the Andes Mountains. Long used as a medicinal herb in Peru and Bolivia, maca root is believed to stimulate the body's endocrine system helping to enhance and regulate hormones. Studies conducted by Dr. Gloria Chacon found that maca root helps both males and females fully respond to their gender specific hormones, helping to increase libido.
Catuaba comes from the bark of several species of trees found in Brazil and has historically been used by the Amazonian Indians to increase sexual desire. There is little scientific evidence on this substance, but a study performed in Japan in 1992 supports that Catuaba has anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties. It is theorized that catuaba stimulates the central nervous system providing strength and energy.
Aphrodisiac
Yohimbe extract comes from the bark of an evergreen tree found in West Africa. It has been used for centuries by African natives for sexual enhancement for both men and women. Yohimbe contains a small amount of a chemical called Yohimbine, which has been the subject of a few scientific research studies. One study conducted at the University of Texas at Austin found that Yohimbine increased vaginal response to erotic stimuli in post-menopausal women. Yohimbe is generally thought to be an aphrodisiac, but there is not sufficient scientific data to support this claim.
Muira Puama comes from a small tree found in the Brazilian Amazon. Studies performed at the Institute of Sexology in France indicate that Muira Puama increases sexual desire and a study published in "Phytotherapy Research" conducted on rabbits found that Muira Puama is effective in relaxing the corpus caverosum, allowing the penis to become completely engorged.
Vasodilators
There are a number of plant extracts that contain chemicals found effective in dilating blood vessels. L-Arginine is an amino acid that once in the body changes into nitric oxide which causes vasodilation, increasing the blood flow to the penis aiding in erection. American Ginseng and Korean Ginseng, both in Extagen, contain ginsinoside, which is a plant steroid. This chemical relaxes smooth muscles, increasing blood flow which in turn can improve erections.
Sperm Promoter
Zinc is essential to male sexual function. A zinc deficiency can impair prostate function and affect sexual desire and potency. The zinc oxide in Extagen helps to increase fertility by increasing sperm motility and quality.
Warning
There is significant data to suggest that taking supplements containing Yohimbe may be hazardous. Consumer Reports has listed Yohimbe as one of 12 dangerous dietary supplements. Yohimbe increases blood pressure and this effect may be enhanced if you are taking prescription medications for blood pressure. Yohimbe has been linked with causing manic-like symptoms in bipolar patients, bronchospasms and a lupus-like syndrome. To avoid any dangerous side effects, always consult your doctor before taking any medications including dietary supplements.
