Turmeric is a spice used in curry dishes, yellow mustard and as a dye for yellow foods such as butter and cheese. Turmeric has a history of being used for stomach upset, inflammation and skin diseases. The compound responsible for the golden color of turmeric, curcumin, is also the compound responsible for many of the health benefits associated with the spice. It is important that any health conditions be treated under the supervision of a healthcare provider.

Inflammation Relief

Turmeric has been used for centuries in Chinese and ayurvedic medicine as an anti-inflammatory. Chronic inflammation is thought to promote the development of many diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, turmeric reduces inflammation by lowering levels of two inflammatory enzymes. Because of turmeric's anti-inflammatory properties, it is also used to alleviate pain associated with osteoarthritis. Remember to always discuss health conditions and treatments with your healthcare provider.

Fights and Prevents Cancer

According to a review published in the journal "Anticancer Research," the compound in turmeric, curcumin, both prevents and fights cancer in several different ways. Curcumin prevents cancer by working as an antioxidant, reacting with free radicals before they can cause damage to blood vessels and tissues. Curcumin also promotes cancer cell death and inhibits growth and proliferation of cancer cells. Cancer should always be treated under the supervision of a healthcare provider.

Prevents Atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis, which is hardening of the arteries as a result of plaque buildup, is a risk factor for developing coronary heart disease. Turmeric prevents atherosclerosis by decreasing platelet aggregation, thus preventing the buildup of plaque. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, turmeric also prevents atherosclerosis by reducing levels of low-density lipoprotein, or LDL -- the "bad" cholesterol in the blood.

Promotes Digestive Health

Turmeric improves digestion by stimulating bile production in your gallbladder. The University of Maryland Medical Center notes a study in which turmeric alleviated gas and bloating symptoms in people suffering from indigestion.
