Prescription medications are effective in treating or managing conditions ranging from high blood pressure to urinary tract infections. However, many prescriptions are expensive and difficult to afford without insurance coverage. Consult a list of cheap prescriptions and discuss the list with your doctor to determine which drugs are effective yet inexpensive.

High Blood Pressure

Beta blockers, ACE inhibitors and diuretics are drugs used to treat high blood pressure. While brand name drugs that do not have a generic equivalent are often expensive, several retailers sell a 30-day supply of generic blood pressure drugs for less than $10. Inexpensive beta blockers include bisoprolol, metoprolol, nadolol, atenolol, pindolol and propanalol. Diuretics that are available for less than $10 per month include furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide and bumetanide. Lisinopril, enalapril, captopril and benazepril are inexpensive ACE inhibitors.

Antidepressants

Several types of drugs are available to treat depression. These drug classes include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, tricyclic antidepressants and atypical antidepressants. Atypical antidepressants are relatively new, but can be purchased at a reduced cost if a generic is used. Nefazodone and trazodone are atypical antidepressants that cost less than $30 for a 30-day supply. Fluoxetine, paroxetine and citalopram are SSRIs that are available for less than $10 for one month's supply. Inexpensive tricyclic antidepressants include amitriptyline, doxepin and nortriptyline.

Antibiotics

Antibiotics are used to treat infections caused by bacteria. Name brand antibiotics can be expensive, but inexpensive generic equivalents can effectively treat infection without becoming a financial burden. Amoxicillin is available for less than $10 for a 30-day supply. Cerner Multum indicates this drug is used to treat gonorrhea, ear infections, salmonella infections and urinary tract infections. Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic used to treat acne, chlamydia, gum disease, gonorrhea and other infections. It may also be given to prevent infection with Lyme disease. This drug is also available for less than $10 per month. Other inexpensive antibiotics include cephalexin, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, penicillin and tetracycline.

Pain Relivers

Pain relievers are used to treat the pain and inflammation caused by arthritis, muscle strains, muscle spasms and injuries. While over the counter pain relievers are effective at treating minor pain and inflammation, it may be necessary to use a stronger prescription drug for moderate or severe pain. Ibuprofen, indomethacin, meloxicam, diclofenac and naproxen are nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) used for moderate pain. Each of these drugs costs less than $10 for a 30-day supply. Cyclobenzaprine and baclofen are muscle relaxants that are also available for less than $10 for a 30-day supply.

Diabetes Medications

Diabetes medications help diabetics control their blood sugar levels. Because diabetes can become life-threatening if not managed properly, it's important that inexpensive diabetes drugs are available for people who do not have medical insurance and cannot afford to pay for expensive medications. Several diabetes medications are available for less than $10 per month. They include metformin, glimepiride, glipizide and glyburide.
