A dry scalp can be painfully itchy and can lead to embarrassing dandruff. According to MayoClinic.com, a common cause of dry scalp is cold weather and overheated rooms. You may also have contact dermatitis, or skin irritation, from styling products or shampoos. Washing your hair too frequently can be another culprit behind dry scalp. Massaging your scalp with natural oils can help to alleviate the annoying itching and flakiness associated with common dry skin.

Step 1

Scoop a dollop of coconut oil into a coffee cup. Coconut oil is often sold in jars as a solid and must be melted before you use it on your scalp.

Step 2

Put the cup into the microwave on high heat for 15 seconds and check to see if the oil is liquefied. If not, continue to microwave it until it is, but be careful that it does not become too hot to the touch.

Step 3

Add a few drops of calendula or lavender oil for extra scalp-soothing benefits. If your scalp is particularly itchy, you can also try a bit of peppermint or tea tree oil.

Step 4

Dip your fingers into the oil and massage your scalp in a circular motion with your fingertips. Be careful not to scratch, even if your scalp is itchy.

Step 5

Leave the oil on your scalp overnight. Wash your hair the next morning with a gentle conditioning shampoo, or dandruff shampoo if flakes have become a problem.
