Losing belly fat can be challenging, particularly as you age. As you grow older, your metabolism slows down, which can lead to weight gain around the abdomen if you take in more calories than you burn. According to personal trainer Stephen Cabral, interval training may be the answer. Interval workouts involve alternating bursts of rapid activity with periods of moderate-intensity exercise. Cabral states that with just four minutes of interval training, you can spike your metabolism and fat burning enzymes and keep them elevated for at least 12 hours.
Step 1
Warm up by moving at moderate intensity for 10 minutes. An example would be walking with long strides, swinging your arms loosely.
Step 2
Increase your pace to approximately 70 percent of your maximum level of exertion. You should break a sweat at this point, but you should still find it possible to have a conversation. Stay at this pace for two to four minutes.
Step 3
Break into a sprint, whatever a sprint is for you. If you are a beginner, this may mean speeding up your walk to the point where you are breathing hard and would find it very difficult to talk. Stay at this pace for one to two minutes.
Step 4
Slow down to 70 percent intensity for another two to four minutes.
Step 5
Continue to alternate speeds at least seven times. Just half an hour of interval training three to five times per week can help you lose stubborn belly fat and keep it off.
