If you've spent any time in the alternative healing community, you might have heard that you should "increase your vibration" or "raise your frequency." Chances are, no one stopped to explain what these mysterious terms mean. "Vibration" is a metaphor for the idea --- popular in energy healing systems like Ayurveda --- that the human body is surrounded by a field of increasingly subtle energies. The further out the layer, the finer or higher the vibration, according to the website Heart of Healing. Sitting meditation and walking meditation in nature are two ways to consciously access the higher levels of your being and raise your vibration.

Sitting Meditation

Step 1

Sit comfortably in a chair with your feet flat on the floor and your spine straight.

Step 2

Inhale as deeply as possible, allowing your abomen to relax and expand. Exhale fully. Practice a few deep inhalations and exhalations to prepare your body and mind for meditation.

Step 3

Breathe naturally, allowing your breath to fall into a gentle rhythm. Close your eyes.

Step 4

Focus your mind on your breathing. As you inhale, silently count "one," then exhale. With the next inhale, count "two." Continue until you reach 10, then begin again at one.

Step 5

Refocus your mind on your breath and begin again at "one" if you lose count or you find your thoughts drifting. Continue to count your breaths for as long as you wish.

Step 6

Open your eyes when you are finished meditating. Take a moment to wiggle your hands and feet and allow your energy to return to normal before you stand up and go about your day.

Walking Meditation

Step 1

Go outside into a natural setting --- the wilder the better. If you don't have access to woods or another pristine natural area, try a local park with trees and a green space, or botanical gardens.

Step 2

Walk slowly and deliberately through the area. You are not powerwalking. Think of this exercise as an enjoyable stroll. As you move, notice any tension in your body and allow yourself to relax.

Step 3

Focus on a detail in your environment: the shape of one leaf, the color of one flower or the activity of a single insect. This focused attention relieves your mind from the burdens of the day.

Step 4

Open your gaze to take in the entire scene around you. Notice movement, patterns and large shapes, like the way the treeline meets the sky. Looking at vistas expands your point of view, and helps you to expand your consciousness.

Step 5

Allow your mind to move deliberately from object to object as you walk. Being in nature helps to clear away stale energies and open you to all levels of your own energy body.

Tips and Warnings

  • Enjoy strolling in nature at night time as well as during the day. Night time quiets the busy mental activity of the day, and is ideal for encouraging a meditative state of mind, advise Patricia Monaghan and Eleanor G. Viereck, pioneers of the women's spirituality movement and authors of "Meditation: The Complete Guide." Working to raise your vibration can be a complex and difficult journey, since you will inevitably confront emotional blocks along the way. Seek out the help of a good instructor who can help you stay on track.
