Mayonnaise, rich in the proteins that come from egg yolks and vegetable oils, makes an effective deep-conditioner for hair. Mixing mayonnaise and coconut oil may give you maximum conditioning benefits. According to a 2003 study by The National Institutes of Health, the essential fatty acids in coconut oil penetrate hair strands and bind to proteins with efficacy similar to that of commercial conditioners. If you would prefer not to spend money on expensive salon conditioning treatments, or prefer to make your own, give mayonnaise a try.
Step 1
Mix equal parts mayonnaise and coconut oil in a small mixing bowl. The amount you need will depend on the length of your hair. Short hairstyles may only need a spoonful of each, while long, thick hair can require 1/2 cup or more.
Step 2
Work the mayonnaise mixture into clean, dry hair with your fingers. Pay special attention to any split ends or frizzy portions. Avoid the roots if your hair has a tendency to be oily.
Step 3
Tuck your hair under a shower cap, or wrap it in plastic wrap. The heat from your head will help the conditioner penetrate. You can also sit under a hood hair dryer or warm the shower cap with a regular blow dryer on low heat.
Step 4
Leave the mixture in your hair for at least 30 minutes, or longer for deeper conditioning.
Step 5
Wash the mayonnaise mixture from your hair with conditioning shampoo and warm water. Repeat the wash at least twice to remove all residue. It is not necessary to follow the wash with regular conditioner unless you wish to.
