About Narconon

Narconon is an international organization that provides information about substance abuse to teachers, law enforcement agencies, employers and parents. The nonprofit group operates more than 120 drug rehabilitation centers in 44 countries and claims that 75 percent of its graduates remain drug-free once they leave treatment. Narconon also produces drug prevention education programs.

History

William Benitez founded Narconon in 1966 while he was a prisoner at Arizona State Prison. Benitez read the writings of L. Ron Hubbard and was able to end his own life-long struggle with addiction. Hubbard, the founder of Scientology, responded to requests of Benitez and other prisoners to advise them as they developed their first Narconon program. The key principle that Benitez adopted from Hubbard was that anyone could improve his condition in life if he had the proper tools to do so. Hubbard believes that humans are fundamentally good and are led astray because of loss, pain and suffering.

Significance

Narconon promotes drug-free detoxification from substances and while the members did not resort to any outside chemicals to assist with detox, in 1975 Hubbard conducted research that led the group to introduce mineral and vitamin supplements to its detox program. Hubbard continued working with Narconon and assisted in developing the Narconon New Life Detoxification Program that includes a regimen of tissue-cleansing therapy, cardiovascular exercise, intensive sweating and fluid replacement.

Effects

Narconon officials utilize what they call a "social education model of rehabilitation." Before entering a facility, patients must undergo a complete medical physical from a doctor and undergo periodic health reviews. Patients at Narconon are called "students" because they are learning a new way to live. The do not consider addiction an illness, but a disability caused by the use of drugs.

Function

Narconon staff produces and presents drug prevention programs around the world. The organization produces books and videos they sell through their website and in their stores. Staffers collaborate with community groups to present activities, events and programs that promote drug abstinence. The Narconon headquarters is located in Hollywood, California.

Warning

The California Department of Education reports that much of the information passed on by Narconon members is not scientifically accurate. For example, Narconon literature says that drugs burn up vitamins and minerals in the body that cause the marijuana "munchies." The organization reports that Narconon information may be misleading and is not always appropriate for the grade level at which is targeted. Information presented as scientific proof of their claims utilizes only Hubbard as the source. Because it is classified as a social program, Narconon treatment centers do not have to meet regulatory guidelines that cover rehabs.
