Calories measure the amount of energy contained in foods. Calorie intake is dependent on a child’s age and level of physical activity; the more calories a child burns off every day, the more she will need to replace.
1 to 3 Years
The American Heart Association states that gender has little impact on calorie requirements at the toddler stage. Your child requires between 900 and 1,000 calories per day, with a focus on calcium-based products.
4 to 8 Years
At school age and older, boys tend to have higher metabolic rates. Girls require 1,200 calories and boys require 1,400 calories every day.
9 to 13 Years
The American Heart Association advises minimally active 9- to 13-year-old boys to consume 1,800 calories per day; girls need 1,600 calories a day. Moderately active children should increase these amounts by 400 calories daily. Very active boys and girls require 2,600 calories and 2,200 calories per day, respectively.
