ADHD, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is common in children, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, affecting 4.7 million children from the age of 3 to 7, reports the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMM). These children, and occasionally adults, have trouble focusing, sitting still, listening, following instructions and sorting information. They may have problems with impulse control as well. Homeopathy is a system of medicine founded on the Law of SImilars, according to UMM, who lists herbal and dietary suggestions for children with ADD and ADHD. The FDA has regulated homeopathic medicines under the Homeopathic Pharmacopeia of the United States (HPUS) since 1938. Always consult your doctor before using herbal or homeopathic remedies.

Hyoscyamus niger

Hyoscyamus is used in homeopathic herbal doses to help settle down a child who has episodes of rage or one who appears silly and foolish, reports Clarke's "Dictionary of Practical Materia Medica." These children can be the jesters in class, disguising their inability to concentrate or sit still. This herbal remedy is suggested to help them behave better in class; however, consulting with a medical professional is necessary when using any herbs or homeopathic remedies.

Stramonium

Stramonium is a homeopathic herbal remedy made from a plant in the same plant family as the tomato. The child who needs this remedy can be violent and suffer from nightmares, according to Clarke's "Dictionary of Practical Materia Medica." They are very fearful, and may be afraid of water and fear death. These children may also kick or bite. This remedy has been used in homeopathy to treat children with autism, as well as the restlessness and other symptoms of ADHD. Adequate research on Stramonium has not been completed, so care is advised. Always consult your doctor first.

Siberian Ginseng

Siberian ginseng, known as Eleutherococcus senticosis, is used by herbalists in treating children with ADHD because the herb is a known adaptogen. It helps the brain to learn to change, and increases the activity of the brain and nervous system. The herb also helps children to grow, along with aiding memory and helping reduce the child's stress reactions. Research in use of ginseng in treating ADD is incomplete, so talk to your doctor before using this herb or combining it with other therapies. UMM reports that this herb has been used by some children, but does not recommend use because of lack of scientific evidence.

Gotu Kola

Gutu Kola is an herb long used in Chinese medicine. Known as Centella asiatica or Hydrocotyle asiatica, this plant is used by herbalists to help reduce stress. The herb is said to have a marked reaction on the blood vessels in the brain, increasing circulation and allowing for better brain function and nerve function. Gutu Kola is used to reduce the cortisol levels that are caused by stress in children with ADHD. UMM comments that this herb has been used to treat this condition, but there is no research backing up the claims.
