Opinions tend to vary on whether those watching their weight should enjoy bananas. While not particularly high in calories, bananas do contain lots of carbohydrates, creating a potential conflict with many diets.

Identification

A tropical fruit, the banana grows in a distinctive curved shape and boasts a rubbery yellow skin. The fruit's pale yellow flesh possesses a creamy, rich texture and pleasant scent.

Features

The exact number of calories in a banana will depend on the fruit's size. According to Banana.com, a large 9-in. banana contains approximately 140 calories, 4 g of protein and 2 g of fiber.

Benefits

A large 9-inch banana includes 123 I.U. of vitamin A, 13.8 mg of vitamin C, 29 mg of folic acid, 9.2 mg of calcium and 44 mg of magnesium. However, bananas are best known for their high potassium content, delivering 602 mg per serving.

Considerations

People counting carbs need to be aware that the same large 9-in. banana will include up to 36 g of carbohydrates.
