Overview

Lipton Brisk Peach Iced Green Tea is manufactured by Pepsi Co. and is little more than chemically flavored sugar water. Although it does contain green tea, that is seventh on the list of ingredients, while high fructose corn syrup is second only to water. "Peach" does not show up anywhere on the ingredients list, although citric acid, natural flavor, caramel color, yellow No. 5 and blue No. 1 do.

An 8-oz. serving has 80 calories, 22 g of sugar, 22 g of carbs, 80 mg of sodium and 4 mg of caffeine.

High Fructose Corn Syrup

High fructose corn syrup, also known as corn sugar, is the second most prevalent ingredient after water. The American Heart Association recommends that women consume no more than 25 g of added sugar, and men consume no more than 35 g, each day. An 8-oz. serving of this tea contains 22 g of added sugar--but this product isn't sold in 8-oz. bottles. The smallest bottle sold is 16.9-oz., just over two servings. If you drink the entire bottle, as most people do, you'll consume 45 g of sugar--far exceeding the AHA recommendation.

Gluten

"Natural flavor" and caramel color, both present in this tea, often contain gluten. This product is not recommended for anyone with a gluten sensitivity, gluten allergy or celiac disease.

Green Tea

Seventh on the list of ingredients is green tea, which the University of Maryland Medical Center reports has the highest concentration of antioxidants of any tea. MayoClinic.com says that antioxidants fight free radical damage, protecting cells, and may "prevent diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease and macular degeneration." Green tea is made from unfermented tea leaves and may be used as a stimulant as it naturally contains caffeine.

Food Additives

Sodium hexametaphophate, phosphoric acid, potassium sorbate, potassium cinnamate, and calcium disodium EDTA have been added to preserve flavor and freshness. Lipton Brisk Peach Iced Green Tea actually has more additives than tea.
