Foods With the Highest Fiber

Fiber is necessary for a healthy diet. However, some people find it difficult to incorporate this nutrient into their diets without a bit of guidance. Luckily, the types of foods that contain the highest amounts of fiber are plentiful and easy to add to a well-balanced menu. You need between 21 and 28 grams of fiber each day to maintain a healthy digestive tract, so be sure to load up on these fibrous foods.

Fruits

Numerous fruits contain a ton of fiber and are an essential part of any healthy diet. A few good examples include strawberries, apples, kiwi, raspberries, blackberries, pear, mango, blueberries, avocado and oranges. Dried fruits work, too, like prunes, apricots, raisins and dates.

Vegetables

Most vegetables contain some amount of fiber, but some contain more than others. A few particularly good sources of fiber are green leafy vegetables like spinach or swiss chard, as well as green peas and broccoli. Several beans are high in fiber as well including lentils, kidney beans, black-eyed peas, chick peas and lima beans.

Grains

Many kinds of grains contain fiber and are essential for a well-balanced diet. The best examples include whole grain breads of any kind, including muffins and bagels, cereals that are bran-based like Fiber One or Smart Bran and cooked cereals like oatmeal. Other whole grains to consider include popcorn, brown rice and barley. Pastas made from whole wheat are good sources of fiber as well.

Seeds & Nuts

Some kinds of seeds and nuts are high in fiber and make for a healthy snack when you're on the go. A few examples include soy nuts, almonds and flaxseed.
