Found growing on palm trees in many tropical climates around the world, coconuts have long represented a symbol of healthy living for millions of islanders. Coconut oil stands out as unique on account of its nutrient content, with the endosperm forming the edible white mass. This section, also known as the copra, may be broken down into shredded coconut; these small pieces of coconut meat provide the same nutrient value as the dried form or the whole copra and the benefits remain identical.
Digestive Function
Coconut copra provides a excellent source of insoluble fiber, providing around 9 g for every hundred. Dr. David Bender, a biochemist from the Imperial College London and the author of "Introduction to Nutrition and Metabolism," explains how insoluble fiber in the diet can help improve digestive function and maintain normal stool frequency. Insoluble fiber, also known as roughage, helps physically provide the bulk required to improve transit time in the colon. Slow transit is linked with a negative disruption of the intestinal bacteria, inflammation of the intestinal wall and poor colon health.
Cardiovascular Health
The oil in shredded coconut can enhance cardiovascular health despite being highly saturated, an unusual feature for a plant oil. Researchers from the Weston A. Price Foundation noted that a multitude of studies now supports the benefits of coconut oil for a number of chronic complaints, with their effects on the cardiovascular system among the most celebrated. The academics point out that the polyphenol content found in the oil appears to inhibit the oxidation of LDL cholesterol or "bad cholesterol" in the arteries. In several experiments, the consumption of coconut oil lowered overall cholesterol levels, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol and lipoprotein(a), all considered markers for coronary risk.
Weight Loss
Shredded coconut may also help induce weight loss, an effect also attributed to the oil content. Dr. Bruce Fife, a physician and the author of "The Coconut Oil Miracle," explains how the medium-chain fats found inside the oil have a key role to play in this effect. He describes how, unlike other fats, they take a direct route from the intestines to the liver for immediate oxidation; their increased availability at this central organ results in increased fat burning for several hours following their consumption. Dr. Fife recommends consuming medium-chain fats several times per day for optimum effect.
