Gastroenteritis is a condition that leads to irritation and inflammation of the intestines and stomach. Common symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal pain and cramps, vomiting and nausea. Causes of gastroenteritis include viruses, bacteria, parasites and food-borne illness. According to Keep Kids Healthy, gastroenteritis is common in children and proper dietary choices may help relieve and control symptoms.

Dehydration

Diarrhea is a common symptom of gastroenteritis in children. Dehydration may make the symptoms of nausea and vomiting worse and must be treated. The University of Toronto advises that patients consume clear fluids during the first 24 hours of symptoms, and then progress as tolerated. Drinking excess fluid may disrupt the stomach and worsen nausea, therefore fluids must be consumed slowly and steadily. Additional fluid may need to consumed in order to replace fluid loss due to diarrhea.

Solid Foods

According to the Cincinnati Children's Hospital, your child's diet may not need to be altered if diarrhea and vomiting are mild and not severe. An infant that is breastfeeding may continue to feed as necessary. The Cincinnati Children's Hospital advises that your bottle-fed baby be fed regularly with formula. Older children may continue with a typical diet, but should avoid foods that may worsen the diarrhea or pain symptoms.

BRAT Diet

The BRAT diet is comprised of banana, rice, applesauce and toast. Although these food choices are good, the Cincinnati Children's Hospital advises that this diet on its own is not enough to supply your child with adequate nutrition. Furthermore, this diet may not reduce symptoms faster. In addition to the foods in the BRAT diet, other foods may be added to ensure your child consumes enough calories and nutrients. Good choices include cereals, lean meats, plain yogurt and pureed vegetables.
