Overview

Wrinkles occur when the skin becomes drier, thinner and less elastic as a result of aging or damage. Wrinkles around the eyes may also result from long-term sun exposure, smoking and genetics. For many people, especially women, eye wrinkles are a major cosmetic concern. Fortunately, it is possible to reduce the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes with proper makeup application, lifestyle changes and cosmetic surgery.

Step 1

Apply a concealer to the area around your eyes. Gently pat the concealer with your fingers, making certain not to rub the area. Concealers with a white base are the most effective at hiding wrinkles.

Step 2

Avoid applying a thick layer of makeup to hide eye wrinkles. Foundation and powder tend to settle into the wrinkles, making them appear deeper, darker and more pronounced. If you must use foundation, apply it sparingly with a foundation sponge.

Step 3

Drink extra water to keep your skin healthy and hydrated. Dry skin is more prone to sagging, which can make wrinkles around the eyes appear deeper. Drink at least 64 oz. of water each day.

Step 4

Draw attention away from your eyes by wearing a bright shade of lipstick and keeping eye makeup minimal. This will make your wrinkles less noticeable to others.

Step 5

Wear sunglasses when outside to hide existing wrinkles and prevent the formation of new ones. Sunglasses reduce squinting, which is a primary cause of eye wrinkles, and they will help protect the delicate skin around your eyes from sun damage. Apply sunscreen beneath your makeup, or wear a foundation that contains sunscreen.

Step 6

Stop smoking to help reduce the appearance of existing wrinkles and keep new ones from developing. Smoking is very damaging to your skin. The Mayo Clinic states that smoking accelerates the aging process and causes wrinkles by narrowing the blood vessels in the skin. The resulting decrease in blood flow depletes the skin of nutrients and oxygen and decreases the skin's strength and elasticity.

Step 7

Moisturize with a serum or cream specifically designed for the eyes. This will help firm the skin around your eyes and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Creams containing retinol, coenzyme Q10, hydroxy acids, kinetin, copper peptides and tea extracts may help stimulate collagen production and hide wrinkles.

Step 8

Undergo laser treatments to help hide and remove wrinkles around your eyes. Laser wrinkle treatments usually take about 20 to 30 minutes and can be performed directly in many doctor's offices. The procedure may cause temporary irritation, but recovery time is typically minimal.

Step 9

Ask your doctor about trying an injectable filler to hide your eye wrinkles. Collagen, calcium hydroxylapatite, hyaluronic acid gel, and poly-L-lactic acid are temporary injectable fillers approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for filling wrinkles.

Step 10

Get Botox injections in the area around your eyes to weaken the small muscles that cause crow's feet and eye wrinkles. Botox injections take less than 20 minutes in most cases, result in rapid improvement, and last for as long as five months.
