Camping Trip From Texas to South Dakota

Carve a swath out of middle America when you pack your tent and hit the road to explore the natural wonder between Texas and South Dakota. This journey takes you through five diverse states that provide many options for recreation. You don't have to see just open highway. Stop and take advantage of zip line adventures in Texas and scuba adventures in Oklahoma. Walk in the steps of Lewis and Clark in Kansas and catch your very own dinner in Nebraska. There is plenty more to see in South Dakota, including the majestic Milky Way.

Texas

Starting your camping trip in the Lone Star State gives you many options to make the most out of your vacation. Texas offers more than 260,000 square miles of territory to explore, whether by car, motorcycle or RV. If you start at the Gulf of Mexico, invigorating stops during your first day may include a pit stop in Texas Hill Country in central Texas. The Cypress Valley Canopy Tours get you off the road and into the air for a sightseeing experience through 100-year-old cypress trees.

Oklahoma

Oklahoma is the next state north. With more than 40 state parks, it offers a place to pitch your tent for the night while still enjoying the natural spectacle of the southwest. Test your nerve and your skill by repelling at Red Rock Canyon State Park, or enjoy an unexpected scuba experience at Lake Tenkiller's dive park. Facilities statewide provide camping either in a tent, an RV or even a cabin.

Kansas

The High Plains are but one of the terrains that cover Kansas, the next state on your itinerary. Whether you wish to hunt or fish, the diversity of the landscape and availability of wildlife will suit you. Maybe you just want to take a step back into the past and walk in the footsteps of the iconic Lewis and Clark, recalling their first journey to the Kansas area back in 1804.

Nebraska

Set up camp for the night in Nebraska, where you can camp either in an RV or a tent. The Alexandria Lakes State Recreation Area covers 55 acres and is open all year. With two lakes, activities such as swimming, boating and fishing are all available. Grills are provided so that you can prepare your catch for the day. Hiking trails are also available so that you can stretch your legs before you get back on the road.

South Dakota

Now that you've reached your destination, pitch your tent and stay awhile. Explore the history of Mount Rushmore in Keystone, South Dakota. This national park does not offer camping facilities, but just an hour and a half east is the Badlands National Park. Not only can you camp there but you also can enjoy the Night Sky program during the summer months. Witness the Milky Way in all her glory as you gaze upon 7,500 stars. If your trip coincides with the early part of August, roar into Sturgis for the mother of motorcycle rallies.
