Facts on Solaray Vitamin B-Complex

Solaray formulates and distributes vitamins and supplements that offer food-grown nutrients that are vegetarian, dairy- and gluten-free. It has several B-complex products to choose from, with its B-complex 100 being the most potent. B vitamins in general are utilized by the body for metabolism, or the breakdown of food into energy. Each B vitamin has specific roles while still contributing to the overall goal of metabolism. Talk to your doctor before taking a B complex, as high amounts of certain vitamins can have detrimental effects.

Thiamine

Solaray includes 100 mg of thiamine, or vitamin B1, in its B-complex 100, which is extremely important for your skeletal muscle system. According to Mayoclinic.com, you need thiamine for nervous system function, muscle maintenance and function, carbohydrate metabolism and the production of hydrochloric acid, which is involved in digestion. Thiamine also is used in the flow of electrolytes in and out of cells. This vitamin is not stored in your body and therefore must be obtained through diet or supplementation. Vitamin B1 deficiencies can lead to disorders of the nervous system, muscles, heart and GI tract.

Riboflavin

Riboflavin, or vitamin B2, also is present at 100 mg per capsule. Mayoclinic.com states that deficiencies of this vitamin are rare. You use riboflavin for normal cell functions, growth and energy production, and it might be helpful in preventing headaches. According to a study published in "Cephalalgia," children given 50 mg of riboflavin had less occurrence of tension-related headaches than control groups.

Niacin and Biotin

In terms of skin and hair growth, vitamins B3 and B7, or niacin and biotin, respectively, can be helpful to add to your diet. According to "Current Pharmaceutical Design," deficiencies in niacin can make you sensitive to light and leave you susceptible to skin disorders. You also require niacin for nerve and digestive system health, as well as to convert carbohydrates into energy. A study published in "Expert Review of Endocrinology and Metabolism" states that deficiencies in biotin can manifest in symptoms like skin diseases and hair loss as well as disorder of the nervous system. The Solaray B-complex 100 has 100 mg of niacin and 100 mcg of biotin per capsule.

B6 and B12

Vitamins B6 and B12 are highly researched and have been found to play important roles in nerve and higher brain functions. The B-complex 100 contains 100 mcg of each, giving you approximately 1,667 percent of your daily value of both vitamins. Vitamin B6 is needed to make the nerve coating, called a myelin sheath. You also use B6 to form serotonin and nor-epinephrine, important brain chemicals for mood, energy and cognitive function. B12 also is needed for nerve function and plays a role in the formation of DNA and red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout your body.

Pantothenic Acid

B5 is another vitamin important for the metabolism of foods, and the Linus Pauling Institute states that B5, or pantothenic acid, makes up co-enzyme A, or CoA. CoA is essential for the breakdown of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. You also need CoA for the production of essential fats, cholesterol, steroid hormones, the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and the hormone melatonin. Hemoglobin, which binds oxygen to red blood cells, requires CoA for its synthesis as well. Solaray supplies 100 mg of pantothenic acid in this B-complex product.

Other B Vitamins

Some of the lesser-known B vitamins include PABA, inositol and choline bitartrate. PABA is technically para-aminobenzoic acid, which is needed for healthy hair, skin and red blood cells. Inositol, sometimes referred to as vitamin B8, is synthesized from glucose by intestinal bacteria. It has a calming effect and helps metabolize fat and cholesterol. One of choline bitartrate's roles is to help the liver export fat. Solaray's B-complex 100 provides you with 100 mg of each of these B vitamins.
