Yogurt has been a staple food in the Middle East for many centuries and North Americans have embraced this health food for its many benefits. To make yogurt, a bacteria culture is added to the milk and by the process of fermentation, the yogurt is created. The bacteria consume the lactose in the milk to create lactic acid -- this may explain the reason why some lactose intolerant individuals are able to consume yogurt without any negative side-effects.

Source of Calcium

A good source of calcium, 1 cup of yogurt contains 300 mg of this nutrient. The interaction between the live cultures found in some yogurt and the calcium, increases the absorption of this mineral into the bones. For people who are lactose intolerant and are at risk for bone disease, such as osteoporosis, yogurt may be a good food option.

Good Bacteria

Your gastrointestinal tract is home to trillions of beneficial microorganisms which are important for supporting a healthy gastrointestinal tract and the immune system. In addition to consuming fruits, vegetables and whole grains, eating yogurt on a regular basis may help maintain the good bacteria in your intestines. However, since the pasteurization process destroys the natural bacteria in yogurt, it is important to look for yogurt containing live cultures or probiotics.

Other Nutrients

A healthy source of protein and B vitamins, some yogurt products are also low in fat and sugar, making it a nutritious snack or a good breakfast alternative. The more natural the yogurt is, the better it is for your health. Natural and artificial sweeteners such as high fructose corn syrup, dyes and flavor enhancers may detract from the health benefits of the yogurt. Opt for plain, natural yogurt which is low in saturated fat and read the labels to ensure that the yogurt you are consuming contains minimal additives.
