The cabbage soup diet has enjoyed a variety of incarnations on the internet and in books. The diet typically promotes a 7-day meal plan that offers cabbage soup as the central character in a very limited cast. Promoters of the diet promise up to 10 pounds of weight loss in one week.

Cabbage Soup

The star of this week-long food show is cabbage soup. You can eat as much as you want. Estimates vary depending on the particular recipe, but calories for a 1-cup serving generally range from 22 calories at Food.com to 71 calories at Fat Secret.

Other Foods

Each day has its own recommended foods you can eat in addition to unlimited cabbage soup. Days one and three offer unlimited fresh fruit except bananas; day two incorporates a selection of unlimited vegetables and one baked potato with butter; and day four allows you to eat up to six bananas and fat-free milk. The remaining days offer their own restricted foods, with days five and six allowing you to eat lean meats.

Daily Calories

Since the amount of certain foods you eat is unlimited and up to the dieter, the precise calories-per-day vary. Estimates usually range from fewer than 800 to 1,000 calories per day.
