The Best Vitamins for Treating Anemia in Toddlers

Anemia is a condition that is caused by lack of adequate red blood cells in the body, according to MedlinePlus.com. Red blood cells provide oxygen to body tissues. Because of their rapid growth, toddlers need more iron than older children. Toddlers who get more than 24 oz. of cow's milk are at risk for developing anemia, according to the website KidsHealth. Several vitamins may be used to treat anemia in toddlers.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C supplements and vitamin C rich foods are important in treating and preventing iron deficiency anemia in children. Vitamin C enables the body to absorb more iron from iron-rich foods, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. Toddlers should be fed iron-rich foods combined with vitamin C rich foods to ensure the body enough iron. Toddlers can also be given children's multivitamin containing vitamin C with their regular meals.

Folic Acid

Folic acid is a B vitamin that is necessary for the production of healthy red blood cells. Lack of folic acid in the diet leads to anemia, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. Folic acid is found in many children multivitamins. Folic acid can also be obtained from folic acid rich foods such as breakfast cereals with added folic acid, spinach, broccoli and other dark green vegetables, liver, bananas oranges and beans.

Vitamin B12

Lack of vitamin B12 in the body leads to pernicious anemia, according to MedlinePlus. Toddlers with pernicious anemia are treated with Vitamin B12 supplements. Vitamin B12 can also be obtained from foods such as breakfast cereals with added vitamin B12, beef, liver, poultry, fish, eggs, milk, yogurt and cheese.
