If you're a regular golfer, you'll notice your club grips become stiff and worn over time. A thin, old grip can affect the quality of your game. Some grip manufacturers recommend replacing your grip every 40 rounds of golf. If you play one round per week, change grips every six months to a year. Even club grips that aren't used as often will deteriorate over time. Make sure you buy the right size grip for you club from a golf or sports store.
Step 1
Put the club in a vise. Use rubber or cloth to protect the club from the vice pads. Tighten the vise until the club is secure and stable.
Step 2
Cut along the existing grip using a very sharp box-cutter knife. Take care not to cut or scratch along the metal or graphite shaft.
Step 3
Pull the grip off the club. Scrape off any bits of tape or grip stuck to the club with your knife.
Step 4
Wrap double-sided grip tape along the length of the club handle until you cover the length of the new grip. Hold the grip alongside the club to make sure you have enough tape. Remove the top layer backing so the sticky side is shown.
Step 5
Push a tee into the open butt-end of your new grip. Hold the grip upright and pour nonflammable grip solvent into the grip and swirl it around. Lower the grip and pour the solvent onto the tape on the golf shaft.
Step 6
Remove the tee and push the open end of the grip onto the top of the club handle. You may need to pinch the end of the grip to widen it and guide it on. Push the grip along the shaft until the top is snug against the butt of the club.
Step 7
Press the grip into place with your fingers. Check the pattern on the grip to ensure you're aligned with the shaft. Firm it into place and allow to dry for two to three hours.
Tips and Warnings
- Place a bucket or tray under the shaft to catch any dripping solvent. Make sure all of the tape is wet with solvent before putting on the grip. Add a little more solvent to the shaft if the grip sticks midway through mounting.
- Do not use flammable solvent. Change your grip in a well-ventilated area such as an open garage.
