Cheese is a generic term that describes products made from curdled milk. There are many varieties of cheese, including Cheddar, Brie and Swiss. Cheese is a high-fat food, although many varieties are also available in low-fat versions.
Full-Fat
The amount of calories contained in an ounce of cheese will depend on the variety. One ounce of Cheddar contains 114 calories. Brie cheese provides 95 calories per ounce and Swiss cheese has 108 calories. Mozzarella cheese, which is commonly used as a pizza topping, has 85 calories per ounce.
Low-Fat
Low-fat cheeses have considerably less calories than their full-fat counterparts. Low-fat Cheddar cheese provides 49 calories per ounce, and low-fat mozzarella has 72 calories per ounce. One ounce of low-fat Swiss cheese contains 51 calories.
