Hill's Pet Nutrition, the makers of Science Diet and Prescription Diet, manufacture a line of cat food used to improve the urinary tract health of felines. The Multicare Feline Bladder Health products are available as both dry and wet cat foods. The food's ingredients are based upon what's necessary to control the amount of minerals in the cat's body, thereby preventing urinary tract disorder.
Minerals
Calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and oxalate are found in control levels of the Multicare Feline Bladder Health line of food products from Science Diet. These minerals can help produce urine that is acidic, but does not add too much acid to the diet. According to Cornell University, this can help prevent recurrences of lower urinary tract disease in cats. Potassium citrate is found in the cat food to prevent bladder stone formation.
Taurine
One of the key ingredients in the Science Diet Multicare Feline Bladder Health food is taurine. According to the MedicAnimal website, this amino acid is required for cellular function and cats use up the amino acid quickly. To prevent deficiency, supplementation can be provided through cat food brands like the one from Science Diet.
Antioxidants
Vitamin E and beta-carotene are two antioxidants included in the cat food from Science Diet. The manufacturer claims that these ingredients will help improve the cat's immune system and oxidize cells.
Vitamin B6
Multicare Feline Bladder Health contains high levels of vitamin B6. This decreases the amount of oxalate formed in the body of the cat. Oxalate is related to feline bladder stones and urinary tract obstructions, according to the Cat Fancier's Association.
Fish Oil
One of the ingredients found in the cat food from Science Diet is fish oil. Fish oil is high in the essential omega-3 fatty acids. A diet high in fish oil can improve the health of a cat's skin and coat.
