The Jenny Craig diet program started in the 1980s and has helped many people reach their weight loss goals. The company's approach is to build a healthier relationship with food through portion control, low-fat eating and exercise. To start, you will meet with a Jenny Craig program director.
The directors are available by appointment through a local Jenny Craig center as well as online. You will be asked to fill out a survey to determine your eating and exercise habits. Your measurements and current weight are also taken during your initial consultation. Based on this information, a diet and exercise plan will be recommended.
Dieting
Based on the meal plans, you can determine which foods you wish to include in your diet. Jenny Craig produces a line of meals to help you access low-calorie and correctly-portioned entrees. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks are available through the Jenny Craig brand. Some examples include cheddar cheese omelet, honey nut cereal, oat bars, beef panini, pasta and meat sauce, southwestern chicken and rice, chicken chowder, pizza, chocolate cake and cheese crackers. You can supplement these foods with grocery items like vegetables, fruit, low-fat dairy and whole grain breads.
Monitoring
On a weekly basis, you will meet with your program director to monitor your weight loss. You will step on a scale and have your measurements taken. You can discuss your diet and try to work out any problems you may be having with the weight loss plan. The consultant will encourage you to include moderate physical activity as part of lifestyle. Some suggested activities may include walking, swimming, cycling and jogging.
Eventually, you will learn how to eat low-fat meals and reduced portions without having to rely on Jenny Craig prepackaged meals. When you are halfway to your weight loss goal, the director will have you eat your own foods for a single day of the week. As you reach your goal weight, more and more days of eating on your own will be permitted. More time exercising and strength training will also be recommended. Once you reach your goal weight, you can choose to end regular visits with your director.
