Fish oil pills may have a taste that keeps coming back -- one of the side effects of many fish oil pills is belching, often accompanied by an unpleasant fishy aftertaste. Fish oil contains high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids which, the Mayo Clinic website says, help your body fight inflammation, lower triglycerides and reduce the risk of heart attack.
It's important to buy high-grade "pharmaceutical grade" fish oil that has been purified to remove toxins such as PCBs and mercury and kept refrigerated at all times.
Step 1
Choose a high-quality fish oil pill that has an enteric coating, which means it will dissolve in the small intestine, rather than the stomach. By passing through the stomach undigested, there is no possibility of an aftertaste.
Step 2
Keep your fish oil pills in the freezer. The cold will not affect the effectiveness of the nutrients, but will stop any burping or possible side effects, such as bad breath, heartburn and nausea. The National Institutes of Health reports that freezing the capsules can often decrease these side effects.
Step 3
Take the fish oil pills while eating. Avoid taking the supplements on an empty stomach, as the Mayo Clinic website suggests. "Fishy aftertaste is a common effect. Gastrointestinal side effects can be minimized if fish oils are taken with meals and if doses are started low and gradually increased."
Tips and Warnings
- Always refrigerate your fish oil because heat can cause the oil to turn rancid.
- If you have an allergy or sensitivity to fish, do not take fish oil pills. High doses of fish oil are associated with an increased risk of bleeding, including nosebleeds and blood in the urine.
