Aripiprazole & Weight Loss

Aripiprazole is the generic name of a medication also known by its brand name, Abilify. Aripiprazole is in a class of medications called atypical antipsychotics used to treat certain mental disorders. Atypical antipsychotics still have the same mental health benefits of earlier generations of antipsychotics but have fewer side effects. However, like other antipsychotic medications, aripiprazole may cause serious side effects, including major weight gain.

Uses

Aripiprazole is prescribed to treat a variety of mental health conditions. It was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat schizophrenia. However, it is now also approved for use to treat bipolar disorder, which is a combination of depression and mania. Aripiprazole is also prescribed as an add-on treatment for depression that fails to respond adequately to antidepressant medication alone.

Purpose

As an atypical antipsychotic medication, aripiprazole reduces feelings of agitation and disturbed thoughts. It is used to stabilize moods in people who are prone to angry outbursts they cannot control on their own. Antipsychotics are also used to control delusions and hallucinations.

Side Effects

Aripiprazole carries the risk of many side effects. Among the most common side effects include headache, drowsiness, dizziness, joint pain and constipation. Increased hunger and weight gain are also common. The risk of weight gain is substantial and increases with long-term treatment. The Florida Mental Health Institute reports that weight gain of more than 44 pounds is common in long-term treatment, and the risk of developing diabetes significantly increases after five years on antipsychotic medications.

Weight Loss

Losing weight while taking aripiprazole may be difficult if the drug increases your appetite. Limit the amount you eat and resist the urge to eat when you feel hungry to lose weight and prevent further weight gain. Keep a food diary of everything you eat and drink in a day to look for sources of empty calories and unnecessary snacking, which you can eliminate. Eat smaller portions, avoid second helpings and dessert. Engage in moderate intensity aerobic exercise for at least 30 minutes each day on most days of the week.

Warnings

Aripiprazole is not approved for use in children under age 13. According to Medline Plus, aripiprazole may not be safe for older adults suffering from dementia. Additionally, talk to your doctor if you have diabetes or have a genetic predisposition to diabetes. This medication can cause diabetes in patients who previously did not have the disease. Glucose control may be more difficult if you already have diabetes or insulin resistance. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience extreme muscle stiffness or difficulty swallowing. Do not stop taking aripiprazole unless directed to do so by your doctor.
