Neck wraps help the muscles to relax and drain away the stress of the day. People who are confined to their home due to injury or illness will appreciate custom neck wraps. Active people who have tired muscles or office professionals who have stressful days will also appreciate the soothing effects of a neck wrap. Creating your own neck wrap gifts gives you the opportunity to personalize the presents. This extra thoughtfulness will make your gifts more personal.
Create the Outer Bag
Step 1
Fold the end of the larger piece of fabric (wrong sides touching) to create a piece that is approximately 17" x 12". This creates a hem.
Step 2
Sew the hem in place.
Step 3
Fold the larger piece of fabric in half (right sides together) to create a 17" x 6" piece.
Step 4
Sew along the unhemmed short end and down the length of the fabric using a 1/4 seam allowance.
Step 5
Turn the pouch right side out.
Create the Inner Bag
Step 1
Fold the smaller piece of fabric (right sides together).
Step 2
Sew along one short end, down the length of the fabric and half of the opposite short end. This leaves a small opening to fill the pouch.
Step 3
Turn the bag right side out.
Fill the Inner Bag
Step 1
Fill the inner bag with approximately 1/2 lb. of flaxseed.
Step 2
Add to the inner bag using lavender. Lavender is an excellent choice to fill the bag due to the distinct aroma that it provides. The aroma is calming and soothing.
Step 3
Add peppermint to the inner bag. Peppermint has menthol, which will soothe muscles and cause them to relax. The hint of peppermint aroma will also relax the mind.
Step 4
Add additional flaxseed until the desired fullness is achieved.
Step 5
Close the opening by tucking the raw edges in and placing the fabric back under the sewing machine. Make sure that no fillings are between the layers about to be sewn.
Tips and Warnings
- Using the neck wrap entails microwaving the inner bag for about one to three minutes. Afterward, place the inner bag inside the outer bag. You may substitute flaxseed with dry rice, buckwheat, beans or even millet seed. Embellish the outer fabric with nonabrasive materials to add a little extra touch. Add cloves and cinnamon if you like the aroma of these herbs.
- Don't fill you bag too full. Leave enough room so the bag will remain flexible and drape around the neck. You may need to experiment a few times to determine the exact amount of flexibility.
