CytoGainer is a high-calorie powder supplement used to make shakes, and is popular with bodybuilders and other athletes. The product is high in protein and complex carbohydrates, but low in fat and sugar. It is designed to put on weight in the form of lean muscle. CytoGainer is generally very safe.

Ingredients

The main ingredients in CytoGainer include low-lactose whey protein, complex maltodextrin carbohydrates from corn and added vitamins and minerals. One serving of CytoGainer is 4 scoops of powder added to 2 cups of water, milk or soy milk.

Time Frame

Manufacturer CytoSport recommends consuming CytoGainer 45 minutes to one hour before your work out, and again between 30 to 45 minutes afterward. This allows your muscles to absorb most of the amino acids and carbohydrates from the product.

Side Effects

CytoGainer is primarily a whey protein product, and some whey protein users report bloating, cramps, fatigue or headaches, as noted by eMedTV.

Dairy Concerns

People with milk allergies may develop adverse reactions to the whey protein in CytoGainer. Lactose-intolerant individuals, however, may not have problems because the product is 98 percent lactose-free.

Considerations

If you're going to add calories to your diet with CytoGainer or any other high-calorie supplement, make sure you get enough exercise to avoid putting on fat instead of muscle. This way you can increase lean body mass while reducing overall fat level, as explained by the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.
