IPL, or intense pulsed light, is a laser treatment used to remove blemishes like scars, freckles, birthmarks and skin discoloration. Sometimes during an IPL procedure, the skin absorbs too much of the laser's light and discoloration or scarring occurs. The New Zealand Dermatological Society indicates that scarring happens rarely with IPL.
Step 1
Monitor your scar for a few weeks to see if it goes away on its own. Scars that result from IPL treatments are almost never permanent, according to the New Zealand Dermatological Society.
Step 2
Talk to your dermatologist to determine what kind of scar you have and why it occurred and what the best course is for treatment.
Step 3
Consider another IPL treatment to remove the scar caused by the first treatment. While this may seem counterproductive, the scar that formed after your treatment is likely different from the original blemish you were trying to remove and may respond better to treatment.
Step 4
Have a dermabrasion or microdermabrasion treatment. These procedures sand away the top layer of skin, allowing new, more normal skin to grow in its place. It's an effective treatment for mild scarring according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Step 5
Consider a chemical peel of your scar has an indented appearance, recommends the American Academy of Dermatology. A chemical peel also removes the top layer of skin so that new, healthy skin can grow in to replace it.
