According to Serendip, a Bryn Mawr College website, colloidal silver is literally a suspension of microscopic silver particles in a liquid or ointment. The ointment itself has a number of uses for health, which include treating burns and skin conditions. However, you should consult your physician before using an alternative medication to ensure that it is not harmful to your health and won't interact with other medications you are taking.

Burns

BurnSurgery.org, an educational tool for burn care professionals throughout the world, says colloidal silver ointment has excellent wound or burn healing potential. In fact, BurnSurgery.org reports that colloidal silver ointment can help to decrease wound inflammation and has antibacterial properties, which impede infections. According to the University of Michigan Health System, colloidal silver ointment is useful in treating your minor burns or sunburns.

Rosacea

MayoClinic.com describes rosacea as an inflammatory skin condition that usually affects adults. Rosacea causes your face to redden, and you may also suffer from red or pus-filled bumps. Rosacea can be very disfiguring and is a chronic condition that requires ongoing treatment. However, according to MayoClinic.com, colloidal silver ointment is useful with treating rosacea. You should apply the ointment to your skin upon breakout, which may help to reduce the inflammation. Never use the ointment for extended periods of time because it can cause you to develop a condition called argyria. Argyria is a permanent medical condition that causes a blue-gray discoloration of your skin, nail, organs or gums.

Acne

According to the Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Health Information Organization, colloidal silver is a useful treatment if you suffer from acne breakouts. Bacteria causes acne; colloidal silver ointment has antibacterial benefits that can treat and even help to prevent acne breakouts. Using a small amount of colloidal silver ointment on the acne and leaving it on overnight is usually enough to treat the problem. However, you should not use colloidal silver ointment for an extended period because it can lead to skin discoloration.
