Colloidal silver water is a suspension of silver particles in water. Colloidal silver was a common medical treatment in the early 20th century. Steady Health reports that colloidal silver made a comeback in the 1990s and can be found in many health food stores as an alternative treatment. However, you should only use this alternative treatment after you have discussed it with your physician to be sure that it is safe for you.
Use as an Antiseptic
Colloidal silver water can help to clean wounds, cuts and scrapes. The solution has antibacterial properties and can help to reduce the risk of infection to any wounds that you might suffer. According to Steady Health, colloidal silver water can but used to apply directly to your cuts, scrapes and open sores. Dr. R.A. Wysk of North Carolina State University reports that the silver in colloidal silver water interferes with the metabolism of bacteria and creates oxygen, which helps to destroy the bacteria membranes. In addition, the International Center for Nutritional Research reports that colloidal silver water does not hurt when applied to even the most sensitive skin.
Use as an Antifungal
According to Steady Health, colloidal silver is beneficial with treating fungus-causing conditions such as athlete's foot because it is toxic to the fungus. You can use colloidal silver water to soak your fingernails and toenails if you have problems with fungus under the nails. However, you should always consult your physician about how long to do this because soaking the nails and skin too long can cause a discoloration of your skin. If you have a fungus that is causing a skin irritation, you can soak bandages in colloidal silver water and apply them to the area overnight.
Treat Burns
Colloidal silver water is an excellent treatment for burns, says Wysk. You can wipe the liquid onto minor burns and sunburns. Colloidal silver water helps to prevent infection of burns and improves healing of the burned area. According to the International Center for Nutritional Research, you can treat burn wounds with colloidal silver water by soaking a bandage in the solution and then applying it to the wound. Band-Aids may work best for smaller wounds.
