Menopause is the termination of menstruation in women, occurring usually around the age of 50. It signals the transition from the reproductive phase to the non-reproductive phase in a woman's life. The most common symptoms related to menopause include hot flashes, menstrual irregularity, depressive mood and irritability, loss of libido and vaginal dryness. Certain herbs and natural products may help relieve these symptoms. However, before using any herb or herbal supplement, always consult a health care professional.
Soy Isoflavones
Soy is a legume native to East Asia that has been widely used as a great source of protein in dietary products. The benefits of soy as a food are controversial, and Health Canada also lists soy bean as one of the nine major common allergens. However, supplements derived from soy have been studied for their role in decreasing symptoms associated with menopause. Menopausal women lose bone rapidly, due to the lack of estrogen, and are at increased risk for osteoporosis. According to a July 2006 study published in the "European Journal of Nutrition," there is a strong correlation between reducing bone loss in postmenopausal women and the dose-dependent effect of soy germ isoflavones. Isoflavones are found in large amounts in soy products and have a similar function to estrogen.
Black Cohosh
Black cohosh, or Cimcifuga racemosa, is a perennial herb native to North America, and has been used mainly in the treatment of menopausal symptoms. A special extract of black cohosh called Remifemin (R) has been well studied for its medicinal qualities. Tripterpenes and flavone derivatives are the key active ingredients of the black cohosh and, therefore, responsible for its therapeutic benefits. A study published in 2007 in the "International Journal of Cancer" concluded that Remifemin (R) can safely and effectively reduce hot flashes, night sweats and irritability and it also lowers the risk of breast cancer by as much as 60 percent.
Sanguinaria and Ignatia
Homeopathically-diluted herbs can also help menopausal women; Sanguinaria and Ignatia are two of the most popular remedies. They are recommended either together with other herbs and minerals or as single remedies. Sanguinaria 3X is a dilution of blood root indicated for menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes, irritability, burning or cold sweat and headaches. Ignatia 4X , a non-toxic extract form the seed pods of the St Ignatius bean tree, may help to improve emotional and mental symptoms associated with menopause. A physician should supervise treatment with Sanguinaria in case of an existing liver disorder or if a person takes multiple conventional drugs.
