Skippy claims its "natural" variety of peanut butter contains no additives, such as artificial colors and flavors, or preservatives. Unlike other natural varieties, this peanut butter does not require messy stirring. However, the added saturated fat to create this effect has negative health effects.
Ingredients
Roasted peanuts, sugar, palm oil and salt are the only ingredients found in Skippy Natural peanut butter's creamy and super chunk varieties. The honey flavor has peanut oil and honey added to those basic ingredients. Compared to Skippy's regular and reduced-fat peanut butter, Skippy Natural does not contain many additives. The reduced-fat product line, for example, includes corn syrup solids and mono and diglycerides. Rather than the hydrogenated vegetable oils found in Skippy's regular creamy and super chunk, the natural version instead has palm oil.
Calories
Two tablespoons of Skippy Natural contain 190 calories in the creamy variety, 180 in the chunky and 200 in the honey. The FDA considers 100 calories per serving of food moderate, and 400 calories per serving high. Since this peanut butter, like all nuts, is high in calories but also nutritious, the key is to keep consumption of it in moderation.
Fat
Twenty percent is considered a high amount of fat in a food product, according to the FDA. Based on this guideline, Skippy Natural peanut butter contains a high level of fat in all its varieties, at about 25 percent; 18 percent is saturated fat. Although Skippy Natural contains saturated fat, it does not contain trans fat, like many other peanut butter varieties.
Benefits
Although Skippy Natural is high in calories and fat content, it also has nutritional benefits. Skippy Natural creamy and chunky varieties contain 8 percent dietary fiber, which is an important nutrient for staying fuller longer and for aiding digestion. Skippy Natural contains 7 g protein, another essential nutrient. Its significant amount of vitamins and minerals includes 10 percent vitamin E and 20 percent niacin.
Considerations
Most other brands of natural peanut butter only contain peanuts and salt with no added oil. These are the kind that require mixing, since the peanuts and natural oil separate. Although Skippy's natural peanut butter does not require mixing, the reason is that it contains added palm oil, which is a saturated fat. Since saturated fat can lead to negative health effects such as heart problems, mixing your peanut butter might be a smarter choice than consuming the added saturated fat.
