The Collins English dictionary defines a diet as a specific allowance or selection of food prescribed to control weight. Most diets can help you lose weight in the short term, but a 2005 issue of the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" revealed that maintaining a consistent eating pattern across weekdays and weekends leads to long-term weight loss maintenance. To reach your weight loss goals you must commit to a daily diet plan that is consistent, personalized and feasible.

A 2010 issue of "BioPsychoSocial Medicine" revealed that behavioral training in self-regulation had a positive association with the adoption of a healthy diet. A healthy diet requires that you make a significant change in your eating habits, which will require you to select foods based on their nutritional quality as opposed to taste and convenience.

Tosca Reno, author of "The Eat Clean Diet Recharged," reveals that a healthy diet should include six small meals a day. Consume a combination of lean protein and a complex carbohydrate like a fruit or vegetable with each meal. Drink plenty of water, grab one scant handful of raw nuts and consume two to four servings of complex carbohydrates like sweet potatoes, oatmeal or other whole grains each day.

A successful personal diet plan requires daily planning. Each evening take 10 to 15 minutes to write down your diet for the next day. Choose the time of each meal and pack a cooler to make the meals accessible and convenient. If you have a business lunch or dinner, choose restaurants that offer healthy choices.
