The skin reaps many of the benefits of eating a well-balanced and nutritious diet. However, there are specific foods that can help reduce the signs of aging. While there is no guarantee that eating these foods will give an instantly dewy complexion, they will help feed the cells the vitamins, minerals and nutrients they need to function.

Fruits and Vegetables

During the process of metabolism, free radicals form in the body. These are unstable molecules that can change the cells in DNA and damage body organs. Called oxidative stress, this is one of the major causes of aging. According to Dr. Susan Taylor at the American Academy of Dermatology SKIN Academy, fruits and vegetables have powerful antioxidants that fight free radicals. Fruits such as blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and blood oranges are some of the best choices. Broccoli and broccoli sprouts, spinach, yellow and orange root vegetables and tomatoes are some of the best vegetable choices that are rich in antioxidants and help fight free-radical damage, keeping skin smooth and young looking.

Yogurt

Probiotics are usually used for their role in digestive health, but according to Dr. Mary Lupo, a board-certified dermatologist in New Orleans, probiotics not only promote skin healing but also help alleviate allergic and inflammatory conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis. Probiotic bacteria include Lactobacillus acidophilus found in live yogurt cultures. The most beneficial of these are in unsweetened yogurt, which can be spiced up a bit with antioxidant-rich berries.

Nuts

According to Women Fitness, most varieties of nuts are a source of monounsaturated fats, which help maintain skin elasticity. Although walnuts are high in calories, they are also rich in potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper and selenium. They help improve your skin and help control and prevent cancer. They can be sprinkled on salads and desserts or eaten as a midday snack.

Water

Although not strictly a food, water is required to keep the skin cells plump, looking youthful and to transport waste products away from the cells. Eight 8 oz. glasses of water every day are necessary to maintain health, get rid of toxins and remove unwanted waste materials. According to Women Fitness, thirst is not an indicator. When the body senses thirst, you have already started down the road of dehydration.

Fatty Fish

Fatty fish, such as tuna fish and salmon, are high in omega-3 fatty acids. These have been shown to reduce low-density lipoprotein and raise the good cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein. According to NaturalNews.com, fatty fish also high in quality protein, which helps improve the skin, giving it a more youthful appearance. Omega-3 fatty acids also help keep cell membranes healthy and reduce damage from harmful substances.
