Herbal Cures for a UTI

Urinary tract infections, commonly known as UTIs, are caused when bacteria enters the urethra. According to The Urology Channel, approximately 8 to 10 million people experience a UTI at least once a year and over 20 percent of those people are female. The most common treatment for a UTI is by using an antibiotic prescribed by a doctor. However, there are herbal cures that can also heal a UTI if used properly.

Echinacea

Echinacea strengthens the immune system and acts as an anti-inflammatory, providing immediate relief to the burning sensation that often accompanies a UTI. According to Medline Plus, echinacea signals the immune system to attack the infection and flush the bacteria out of the body by speeding up the urine flow. The key to using echinacea effectively is to take it immediately following the onset of symptoms. This herb can be found in tea form, capsule or tincture. Echinacea should be used with caution because it may have contraindications or side effects.

Goldenseal

Goldenseal has antimicrobial and anti-viral properties. Medline Plus suggests that goldenseal root can immediately help fight off a urinary tract infection by soothing the inflamed tissue and by creating a barrier between the bacteria and the urinary tract walls. This herb is also used best as a tea, capsule or tincture. As with every herb, take precautions before using.

Dandelion

Dandelion root has strong detoxifying and diuretic properties. This herb immediately increases urine flow, which helps the body eliminate any remnants of the leftover bacteria that was causing the infection. Research done on the medicinal plants of the Southwest by New Mexico State University also suggests that dandelion root decreases the inflammation that a UTI causes and can provide instant relief for the false sense of urgency most people experience. It is important to use this herb with care and it may be beneficial to talk to a doctor before ingesting.
