Everyone wants to stay healthy and young-looking. After all, who wouldn't like to live an active, illness-free life while appearing fresh and vibrant as they age? Of course, aging, illness and injury happen to everyone, but some of the most important factors in how healthy you are and how young you look are lifestyle behaviors. In other words, they are under your control.
Step 1
Stay out of the sun or protect yourself from it. Exposure to the sun is one of the main causes of premature aging of the skin, resulting in wrinkles, a leathery appearance and brown spots. These signs of aging can begin as early as your early 20s, says Ohio State University. To prevent premature aging of the skin and avoid skin cancer, stay out of the sun during the peak sun hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., wear sunscreen on all exposed skin every day, wear protective clothing such as a sunhat, sunglasses and long-sleeved shirts when out in the sun, and avoid tanning salons.
Step 2
Maintain good nutrition. There is ample scientific evidence supporting the notion that a healthy diet can help prevent many chronic and terminal diseases. MayoClinic.com advises you to emphasize fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and omega-3 fatty acids, and avoid saturated fat, trans fat, excessive sodium and added sugars. Good nutrition also helps your hair, skin and nails remain healthy and attractive.
Step 3
Exercise regularly. The Federal Citizen Information Center states that exercise not only helps you feel better and maintain a healthy weight, it also can prevent at least six major diseases: heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, osteoporosis, obesity and mood disorders such as depression. For optimal health, engage in an exercise you enjoy on most days of the week, for 30 to 60 minutes each time.
Step 4
Stop smoking. You already know that smoking causes cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke and pulmonary disease, but smoking also leads to premature aging of the skin in the form of excessive wrinkles. Stay away from smoking if you want to stay healthy and young-looking.
