Utah provides a lot of support for archery enthusiasts, with several clubs and organizations that offer a classes, shoots, tournaments and/or practice ranges for all styles of archery. One club welcomes membership even from those who are not interested in archery for themselves, but would like to support archery in general, and another acts as a watchdog group for the interests of archers within the state of Utah.

Benefits

The benefits of joining an archery club in Utah range from the physical to the social and beyond. Archery is a sport that is open to virtually any person regardless of age, gender or ability. Many non-athletic people find they can excel at archery, which makes it a wonderful sport for kids and families. Archery also builds physical stamina, concentration and allows for personal growth within a social context. Utah clubs are welcoming to all and have much to offer at any level of participation.

Types

Most Utah clubs include all types of archery. Traditional archery uses simple, wooden equipment for target shooting at an indoor or outdoor range. 3-D archery involves shooting animal-shaped targets set up in a hunting simulation. In 3-D archery, participants must accurately estimate the distance to the target to score maximum points. Bowhunting is the sport of hunting with a bow and arrows and has surged in popularity over the last few years. Hunting was original purpose of archery and remains a major influence of the general sport.

Clubs

Some of the largest archery clubs in Utah include Salt Lake Archery in Salt Lake City, Datus Archery Club in West Jordan, Red Rock Bowmen in Southern Utah and the statewide Utah Bowmen's Association. Salt Lake Archery, Datus and Red Rock Bowmen all welcome archers of all styles and support families interested in archery as well. Salt Lake Archery offers lessons fo kids and adults, league archery, a Junior Olympic club and a pro shop. It also sponsors three large tournaments each year and will host your child's birthday party. Datus Archery Club features a clubhouse, several leagues and two levels of membership.

Bowmen's Lobby

Utah Bowmen's Association is an organization that helps coordinate and support all archery and bowhunting-related concerns within the state of Utah, particularly those involving the Utah Division of Wildlife. Utah Bowmen's Association closely watches hunting regulations and conservation efforts with an eye toward preserving the tradition of bowhunting within the state. It welcomes the membership of other archery clubs as well as individual archers of any style.

Considerations

Because each club's features, offerings and atmosphere will be slightly different from all the others, it makes sense to check out a few before becoming a member. Most Utah clubs welcome those who are interested but undecided, even allowing use of ranges for a small fee. If you have children, find out what each club offers in terms of youth programs. Whatever your preferences, you will be sure to find a club in Utah that meets your needs.
