Hot hand warmers can create comfort for anyone working outside or in cool office buildings. Custom hand warmers can be created in just a few hours with a little fabric and a few essential ingredients. Many people would enjoy receiving hot hand warmers as gifts. These are people who sew a lot, use the keyboard, people with arthritis and even patients in the hospital.

Create Gloves

Step 1

Fold one piece of 8-inch x 11-inch fabric in half to create an 8-inch x 5 1/2-inch piece.

Step 2

Place your hand on the fabric. Measure from your middle knuckle to your wrist and mark the fabric.

Step 3

Trace the outline of your hand on the wrong side of the fabric (the side that would face inwards on the finished product). Leave an opening at the thumb. If these are for gifts, adjust the size of the trace to estimate the size of the recipient's hand.

Step 4

Sew a 3 1/2 inch square of fabric to the wrong side of the fabric of the glove. This will hold your heat pack.

Step 5

Sew the glove outline with your sewing machine. Leave an opening for the thumb and an opening at the top for the fingers. Leave one side of the wrist open.

Step 6

Cut the glove, leaving a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

Step 7

Hem the raw edges.

Step 8

Create a closure by sewing a 2-inch piece of Velcro tape to the right side of the fabric on the palm side of the wrist. Sew a 4-inch piece of Velcro tape on the wrong side of the fabric on the top part of the wrist.

Step 9

Repeat for the other glove.

Create the Pouches

Step 1

Cut the 12-inch x 3-inch strip of fabric into four 3-inch x 3-inch squares.

Step 2

Put two squares of fabric together with the right sides touching and sew along three sides of square. This leaves one side open to fill the pouch.

Step 3

Turn your square aright side out.

Step 4

Repeat with two remaining squares.

Fill the Pouches

Step 1

Fill the pouch with approximately 3 tablespoons of flaxseed.

Step 2

Add a pinch of lavender and a few drops of peppermint oil.

Step 3

Close the opening on each pouch with the sewing machine. Ensure the fillings are not at the edges being sewn.

Tips and Warnings

  • To use the Hot Hand Warmers: Microwave the pouch for about one minute. Place the pouch inside the glove pockets. Optional: The edges can be embellished with craft feathers for a fun look.
  • Don't fill your hand warmer pouches too full. They should fit snugly but not tight within the glove.
